Algebra Notes: Thursday 2/17/00

I. Write an algebraic expression
1.) one more than twice a number
2.) one less than a number
3.) twice the sum of a number and 1
II. Evaluate when x is -1 and y = 4
4.) 2x² + xy
5.) , read as "x to the y"   Answer
III. Combine Like Terms
6.) 3x - 6y + 5x - 5y
7.) 9x² + 8x - 6x + 4x²
8.) xy² + x²y - 3x²y - xy
III. Vocabulary: distribute
IV. Calculator Techniques
Using STO to evaluate an expression.
STO permits the user to store a constant value in the calculator so that its value may be used.
Ex. Evaluate 2x when x is 6
1st: Type 6 on the display.
2nd: Press the STO key.
3rd: Press the X key or ALPHA then X.
The color of the ALPHA key is the same as the color of the printing of the letters above the keys.
4th: Press ENTER and the 6 appears on the display.
5th: Type 2x on the display.
6th: Press ENTER and 12 appears on the display
because 2(6) is 12.

II. page 129, #29, #35

Algebra Notes: Thursday 2/24/00

I. Without referring to your notes, state The Laws of Exponents
Ia. Vocabulary     exponent    radical sign    radicand    index    square root
II. Simplify.
1. a4 ÷ a2
2. a4 ÷ a3
3. a4 ÷ a4
