QUIZ on PMDAS, page 5 QZ
1.Current Order of Operations

5.(6 + 3) x 4 - 1

Pg c80d, #1: PMDAS Order of Operations

Top: Parentheses & marks of inclusion (innermost first)
Next: Multiply or Divide (leftmost first)
Last: Add or Subtract (leftmost first)
PREMDAS Answers: Pg 6.

1. Simplify:               2. Simplify:   (-2 + 5)² = 3² = 9
  3 - 4 x 5 + 6 ÷ (-3)
  3 - 20 + -2
  3 - 22 = -19

3.Simplify:
  { 2 + (-4 + 6)·(5 + 3(-2))}(-1)
  { 2 + (-4 + 6)·(5 + 3(-2))}(-1)
  { 2 + (2)·(5 + (-6))}(-1)
  { 2 + (2)·(-1)}(-1)
  { 2 + (-2)}(-1)
  { 0}(-1) = 0

4. State the result if you:
Loose $10, win $4, loose $2 twice, win $3, win $3, win $4, loose $6 =
  - 10 + 4 -2(2) + 3 + 3 + 4 - 6 =
      - 6     - 4   + 6  + 4 - 6 =
        - 10 +     10 - 6 = -6, Loose $ 6.

5.Simplify each then comment on the reason the answers are different.
   a. -2² = -4 since exponents are done before multiplication
   b. (-2)² = 4 since (-2)(-2)= 4

6.Simplify each then comment on the reason the answers are different.
   a. 4 -5² = 4 - 25= -21, exponents before subtraction
   b. 4(-5)² = 4(25)= 100, exponents before multiplication

7.   Simplify:

PREMDAS Questions, pg. 9.

Restate

    1.   State the Order of Operations, as presented thus far.

Questions 2 - 9: Simplify.

2.    -20 + 6 - 4 + 3 x (-2)
= -20 + 6 - 4 - 6
= -14 - 10 = -24

3.    3 x (4 - 7)² x (-6 + 4)
= 3 x (- 3)² x (- 2)
= 3 x (9) x (-2)= 27 x ( -2) = -54

    4.    -6²= -(6)² = -36

    5.
=2 x { (-2)² + 2} - 1
=2 x { 4 + 2} - 1
=2 x 6 - 1= 11

Restate
    6.
=4 + 2 + 64 - 1 = 69

Restate
    7.    5²(5¹)(5³) ÷ (5³)
=5 to the (2 + 1 + 3 - 3) power
= 5 to the 3 power = 125

Restate

    8.    -(-(-(-(1))))= +(+1) = 1

9.
6 - 2 + 1 - 11 = -6

Restate

    10.    Any number to the zero power, other than zero, is ONE.

Restate

    11.    Any number to the first power is THAT NUMBER.

Restate

    12.    The sum -2 + 3 - 5 is the same as - 5 + -2 + 3.

Questions 1 - 4: Write an arithmetic expression which achieve the following result. Do not simplify except to verify your work.

1. to the product of 4 and 12 add the square of 3
(4)(3)+3²
2. Double the sum of 2 and 6. Increase the result by 4. Triple this result.
2 · (2+6), then 2 · (2+6)+4, then 3 · (2 · (2+6)+4)
3. the opposite of the square of 7
the square of 7 is 7²
the opposite of this is -7²
4. the square of the opposite of 7
the square of is ( )²
the square of the opposite of 7 is (-7)²

Questions 5 - 11: Simplify.

5.    6 - 4 x (-2)= 6 - (-8)= 6+8=14

6. 2 · (3 + (4 - 7) ÷ 3)=
2 · (3 + (- 3) ÷ 3)=
2 · (3 + - 1)=
2 · (2)=4

7. (6 - 2²)² = (6 - 4)² = 2² =4
