2010 Irvington Professional Academy Course 3
Enabling Students with Special Needs to Succeed in Math (Grades 3-8)

PROJECTS, January 23, Feb 20, March 6, March 13, March 20, 2010

On a daily basis, course content will be presented using the Languages of the Math Classroom, © '98, Agnes Azzolino.   Though designated years ago, these languages provide a significant framework for addressing needs of each student through the auditory, symbolic, visual, and kinesthetic modalities of “individualized instruction.”

    "Teachers will discover how
  • to adapt their own curricula and
  • to collaborate with special needs teachers
  • to help students succeed in the classroom,"
as described by the IBOE "Department of Mathematics, Course # 3."

On a daily basis, course content will include work in each area named here by a NJ Math Curriculum Standard:

  • Number Sense and Numerical Operations,
  • Geometry and Measurement,
  • Patterns, Algebra, Functions,
  • Data Analysis, Probability, and Discrete Mathematics,
  • Mathematical Processes - Problem Solving, Communication, Connections, Reasoning, Representations, Technology.
Each student will be required to produce and to present to the class a project
  • relating work in this course and
  • work their students might complete in their classroom.

This material might later be disseminated district-wide.

The class will begin promplty at 8:30 am and run to 12:30 pm, with breaks at the discretion of the instructor.   Both classwork and homework reflect quality appropriate to graduate coursework.
