Jackie. Jackie & Terrell took a car ride and a walk that was a total of 40 miles. The car speed was 15 mph and the walk was 4 mph. The walking time was 4 times the car ride. What is the distance for each?
(car) + (walk) = 40
15(x) + 4(4x) = 40
15x + 16x = 40
31x = 40
31x/31 = 40/31 about 1.3 hours
car traveled 15(1.3) miles, 19.5 miles
walked 16(1.3), 20.8 miles

Draw the Paths in the Air
With two fingers, draw paths in the air to represent the distances described.
1. Two cars start in a desert and head in opposite directions. After 2 hours, they are 6 miles apart.

2. Two cars start 150 miles apart and travel towards each other till they meet.

3. A car starts on a trip at 8 am and a second car starts 1 hour later and catches the first after 4 hours.

4. tom starts on a trip. John starts when and where Tom stops. Together they travel 50 miles.
